Iglu Melbourne Central, designed by Bates Smart, was conceived as a calm presence within a diverse streetscape, uniting the mix of architectural styles that define its rapidly evolving context. Its slender tower form responds to the compact site, while a disciplined brick-and-concrete grid, aligned with neighbouring height lines, creates order without relying on recesses or steps.

The Lighting, crafted by lighting designers FPOV, plays an essential role in shaping the building’s character. Subtle exterior lighting highlights the vertical grid, bringing depth and rhythm to the façade after dark, while warm interior illumination activates the street edge and enhances a sense of welcome.

Inside, 374 studio apartments are supported by shared amenities across the building. Lighting is carefully orchestrated to balance functionality with atmosphere—from the layered entry sequence to communal spaces throughout—culminating in the rooftop terrace, where lighting frames the skyline and extends the building’s presence into the night.
