Located in a heritage-listed building on Sussex Street in Sydney, Prefecture 48 is a vibrant Japanese destination that seamlessly blends culture and modernity. Housed in a former storage facility, the space is divided into two sections, connected by a central courtyard. Drawing inspiration from Japan’s 47 prefectures, Prefecture 48 introduces an unofficial “48th” prefecture through its diverse cultural and culinary experiences. Inside, you’ll discover four restaurants, a patisserie, and a whisky bar.

The interior design, crafted by Bates Smart combined with the elegant lighting design of Electrolight, beautifully merge each venue’s unique Japanese character with a contemporary flair, all while preserving the building’s original heritage elements. This thoughtful integration creates a harmonious balance between the old and the new, weaving an artistic narrative throughout. The design journey encourages discovery, with each venue offering its own distinct chapter and personality, yet all remain connected by a shared story. Lighting plays a key role in shaping this theatrical experience, with a refined, dramatic ambiance achieved through the careful restraint of brightness.
