The Green heart is an experimental approach to the densification of low-rise building, located in Sydney’s northern suburb Balgowlah. Taking advantage of a corner block lot, the extension of one unit to an existing block of 4, creates space where it’s unexpected.
The new extensions above an existing carport, articulates around a “green heart”: an open covered terrace which acts as the lung and regulates the weather in summer and winter. All the rooms open onto this versatile open space and benefit from cross ventilation and controlled light. A series of integrated planters into balustrade creates privacy and frame views while addressing the street in a sustainable manner. A refreshing change and modern innovation for a suburban space.
“Green Heart” was shortlisted under the EmAGEN category at the 2025 NSW Architecture awards.
